EXCLUSIVE news from the camp of the legendary Beat-rock-folk-poetry band as the group celebrate their late, great member Tuli Kupferberg on record and bring unheard work back to life
Journalist and Kerouac biographer Steve Turner writes: 'I met Tuli in Greenwich Village when researching my Kerouac book. There was a guy called Steve Dalachinsky who used to sell bootleg cassette tapes on the sidewalk of MacDougal street. I bought a load of Kerouac tapes from him and one day as I was talking to him Tuli came up and Steve introduced me to him.'
A documentary about Tuli solo is also in the works created by talented French film maker David Liver with the assistance of videographer Francois Combin. Liver shows a remarkable appreciation of Tuli and his doc Tuli! Tuli! Tuli! is going to be a gem! His girlfriend made a fab funny but realistic puppet called Little Tuli that's going to be in the film too.
Yes, Thelma – thank you for the reminder. I spoke to his daughter Samara about these matters in an interview we carried. You can find two stories in the R&BG archive, in fact: 'Interview #1: Samara Kupferberg', November 3rd, 2021' and 'Samara! Samara! Samara!', November 9th, 2021
Thank you, Steve for that. Sadly Steve Dalachinsky died, aged 72, in 2019. I met him at the European Beat Studies Network conference in Paris in 2017. He was a very amusing, entertaining livewire New Yorker. Much missed.
Simon, Steve sold his tapes on Spring Street, not Mac Dougal because he lived down the block and didn't have to carry them too far. I worked across the street from him selling my handicrafts , crochet and decorated sunglasses, and Tuli's prints, tapes , and CDs .
Thank you, Thelma, for correcting that point of detail. You obviously knew him and his neighbourhood well. I only met him once, in Europe back in 2017, and found him a most warm and amusing individual. How is his charming wife doing, I wonder?
Simon, I think you may enjoy this interview I filmed with Steve and Yukoi and Tuli at their home some years back for Revolting News, Tuli's cable show which I now produce. Yuko did a fine memorial for Steve, you can find her talk and lots of footage on Youtube. Yuko is on Facebook as Steve Dalachinsky.

Is there a release date for this?
Some info to follow, Jett.
