A fine thing that David Amram will be part of the festivities. Really enjoyed reading that bit in your article. Such an inspiration to know that he's still going strong at 91. Reading this makes me nostalgic for the village. My grandparents lived their for decades, so much a different place then.

Thank you, Marc. With regards to the Village, are you unhappy with the gentrification of the area? What is your reference to it being ‘a different place’? I must confess I haven’t been there for something over 10 years but your remark raises some interesting questions. The festival makes it sound a thrilling community but maybe only for those who are really quite well-heeled.

Hi Simon,

gentrification is almost an insufficient term to describe the increase in the price of living in Greenwich village. Parts of the village had originally been quite gentrified, but it was always a place where people of various incomes, professionals and social statuses could live. As the city de-industrialized it became very cheap to live and created a marvelous sustained bohemian world for many and an affordable place to live in Manhattan for middle class folks as well as artists and intellectuals. For folks who have lived there a long time and are under rent control or stabilization this is still possible, but these folks are a waning few, and the market precludes all but the most wealthy from owning or renting in the neighborhood. Yes, that indeed is what I meant by a very different place. Thanks for asking.
