I haven't really looked into this, but the common assertion that the first known use of ‘hippie’ in print was in Michael Fallon's ‘A New Paradise for Beatniks’ in the San Francisco Examiner (Sept. 5th, 1965) appears to be incorrect. A quick Google search yields an earlier reference in a syndicated newspaper column: ‘Dorothy Kilgallen's Voice of Broadway’, The Montreal Gazette, June 11th, 1963: ‘New York hippies have a new kick - baking marijuana in cookies.’
